Pre-K (Chaos in the Classroom)

First Day

When I first dropped the muppets off in the toddler room of their preschool, Destroy still couldn’t walk. Search couldn’t (or more likely wouldn’t) talk. They’ve had three years of amazing teachers since. (And now they won’t sit still or shut up.)

Today I dropped them off for their first day of pre-K. Continue reading

Fingerpaint Threatens Friendship (or this means war)

Logan_Grrr_06-28-14

The mercury stretched toward 90. We were planning beach trip to celebrate the second birthday of the pixie stix.

The boys were outside playing while I packed up our gear. Suddenly I heard an ear-piercing shriek calling my name. Search looked up at me, sidewalk chalk streaked across his face like war paint. Red ooze dripped down his arms like blood. Continue reading

An Open Letter to My Sons on Their Fourth Birthday

Muppets 4

Dear Search and Destroy,

Happy Birthday. You get it this year – buzzing with excitement, bouncing with anticipation.

You are such spirited boys, teaching your father and I so much about the world as we rediscover all around us through the magic of a preschooler’s eyes, all while creating the whirlwind of trademark muppet mayhem around you.

How far we’ve come. Continue reading

Con te partirò (Time to say goodbye)

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

When I’m alone
 I dream on the horizon
 and words fail;
yes, I know there is no light
in a room where the sun is absent,
if you are not with me, with me.
At the windows
show everyone my heart
 which you set alight;
enclose within me
the light you
 encountered on the street.

What was once something taken for granted became something special; a time to look forward to became something needed. Continue reading

Devil’s in the Diaper

Expulsion_from_Garden_of_Eden_Masaccio

The true parable of Adam and Eve does not detail punishment by banishment from a literal utopian garden. It is an allegory illustrating the evolution of man; the development of human brains to combat the elements by donning clothing, thus leading to the invention of potty training. Continue reading

How Many Times Can I Say This

Blogiversary

Today I realized this little blogging endeavor of mine has been going on over four years. My sons’ lives have quite literally been blogged since birth. In no way has my story ever arced the way I expected – I guess that’s partially what keeps me writing.

Thank you for being part of my journey, and for reading the highlights behind the headaches and hilarity that Search and Destroy bestow upon their ever expanding world.

In honor of Stream of the Conscious’ fourth blogiversary, I give you a few of the more memorable comments I’ve actually heard myself saying. Continue reading

California Dust Bowl

1398448_84391159

California needs rain. And I know the upcoming drought is going to be bad. But oh how I’ve been enjoying the mid-winter sunshine. (Sorry to gloat polar vortex people, we’ll be paying for it soon enough.)

I never thought I’d find myself wishing for soggy weather – but we could really use a good El Nino in these upcoming months. Because I use a lot of water. A lot. Continue reading

The Hardest Age is the One They’re At

Rockwell_1958_Before-the-shot

I tiptoed into the bedroom. After an hour and a half of naptime hysterics, Destroy had finally passed out and was sound asleep. His bare naked bottom was stuck straight up in the air.

Part of the tantruming routine involved frenziedly ripping his pants from his body. A full blown, mind-numbingly impressive, the power of Christ compels you exorcist, clearly possessed melt down ensued. Again.

Barely Legal

Eighteen years ago I was a sophomore in high school. (It just occurred to me that I have been out of high school longer than it took me to get through it.)

Today my cousin Mitch turned 18. Continue reading

The Terror of Public Restrooms

Outhouse

Our tour of every public restroom in the great state of California has begun.

As much as I’d like to just hide at home during the (glacially slow going) training phase of potty skills, after a certain amount of peepee mopping, you’ve just gotta get out. And this requires asking/encouraging your little potty rookies if they have to use the facilities every 32 seconds. Continue reading
