Winecone Wednesday – An American in Paris Edition

Twelve years ago I ventured forth to England to study abroad at Durham University. I landed at Heathrow Airport only to discover my luggage was missing. As I skulked toward the student bus with a teacher trying to get me to see the positive because SHOPPING (and I tried to explain a student budget with personal space issues including not wanting to borrow another’s undies), my name boomed across the PA.

Richard Chamberlain had stolen my luggage. Continue reading

One Fine Day

Yesterday was an uneventful day. There were no major mishaps, no side-splitting peals of laughter, no ear-splitting major muppet meltdowns. There were no earth-shattering revelations or once in a lifetime experiences.

It was a typical day. And our family lived our lives.

In What Alice Forgot, she forgot a decade of her life. If that were to ever happen to me – these are the moments I’d miss most. Life simply happening. Continue reading

Found Nemo

Have you heard the news? Thirteen years after the original won an Academy Award for Best Animated Picture, the sequel to Finding Nemo is hitting the big screens (due out 2016).

Given the theatrics of the 2003 elementary age clownfish, one can only assume poor Marlon has one hell of a rebellious teenage fish. Or maybe Nemo is now a father of his own accord and karma is rearing its ugly head. “Come find me now, funny fish!” Continue reading

Mother of all Tantrums

@HonestToddler: Pre-bedtime hysterics! Amiright? Going out in a blaze of cray cray!

I am aware I was not the most subdued of children. I’ve offered to let my mom take to these here interwebs to provide her memoirs on my adventurous toddler years. She politely demurred. Noting that nothing good could come of that little endeavor. (So that gives you a brief idea.) Continue reading

Winecone Wednesday – Measure Twice Cut Once Edition

Fear not. I didn’t forget this week. But I was preoccupied with the furniture.

I’m doing this writer thing now. So I decided it was time for a new office setup. A nice cozy writers enclave to craft my well told stories (and throw winecones). Pottery Barn desk I’ve coveted for 10 years – thou art mine!

Except, well, I didn’t measure the dimensions correctly. So while I got everything all set up (and it TOTALLY looks adorable), it didn’t really go together with the ease I had imagined, which then led to having to redo the husband’s section of the office. Continue reading

TechMomTuesday: Kate Spade Computer Bag Review

Welcome to Tech Mom Tuesdays!

It’s Tuesday, I’m a mom, and I’m a tech geek. I was thrilled when Clinton from AlliOSNews asked me to provide my weekly perspective. (I don’t think he quite knew what he was getting himself into – but the idea is to share how all my tech toys play out in the real world. Or at least my world.)

Here’s a sneak peek at what’s going on over there: Continue reading

The Muppet Theory

There’s a new theory out there. One I think we can all relate to.

History has seen many famous psychologists: Descartes – the father of modern philosophy, Pavlov and his dogs, Maslow with his hierarchy of needs, Frued’s issues with his mother, identity-crisis Erikson, Jung and his introverted/extroverted personalities, Piaget’s studies of children, and now, Dahlia Lithwick.

The Mupppet Theory. Continue reading

Ghost Light

The boys won’t sleep. Neither of them. The whining would begin the moment the doorframe came into view. The banshee wails began as the child was held over the prison crib walls.

We attempted a reset. Turned on all the lights. Ran around the big room for a bit, then tucked the back into bed. No go. The moment the lights went out again, the screams intensified – to those desperate pathetic hiccupping sobs.

There was only one plausible explanation. The boogieman has taken up residence in the boys’ room. Continue reading

League of Their Own: Dickheads

What are little boys made of?
Snips and snails, and puppy dogs tails
That’s what little boys are made of!

What are little girls made of?
Sugar and spice and all things nice
That’s what little girls are made of!

You know the stereotypes.

Boys – vocal and violent – the feared fifth-grader beating up the first-grader for his lunch money.
Girls – quiet and subversive – a best friend suddenly turning on another, sabotaging friendships with silent but knowing looks. Continue reading
