New York State of Mind

The sun set somewhere in Connecticut. The scenery whizzing by through the train windows faded from lush green landscapes along the countryside into darkness. Then, as we closed in on our destination, the New York City skyline rose up from the twilight. The bright lights illuminated the busy bustling city and my two-dimensional vantage point framed the iconic buildings as natural as an Ansel Adams photo. Continue reading

Hello City

5 states. 4 days. 3 hotels. 2 red-eyes. 1 very exhausted me. I hit the East Coast for a business trip last week. What a ride. Hello city!

I took the red-eye flight out of San Jose into Boston. It turned out to be a pretty uneventful flight. When I stumbled into Hotel #1 at 6 a.m., the employees were altogether far too chipper for me. “Can we get you some coffee, a paper? Perhaps some water?” I think I smiled. I don’t really remember. I just wanted the key to my room.

Hahvad Yahd

I’m in Boston. (One if by land, two if by sea!) It’s a work thing.

Today, we got lost. (I know – you’re shocked.) Tonight, I am exhausted. Tomorrow, stories will follow.  Continue reading

42nd Street

In the heart of little old New York,
You’ll find a thoroughfare.
It’s the part of little old New York
That runs into Times Square.
A crazy quilt that “Wall Street Jack” built,
If you’ve got a little time to spare,
I want to take you there.

This post is a little detour from the fantabulous adventures of the muppets. They’re off celebrating Jim Henson’s 75th birthday. So, as I procrastinate packing for my very first Empire State of Mind trip to the Big Apple – a little insight into my background of Broadway dreams. Continue reading

Ball!

Search has a new word. “Ball.” He is very proud of his new linguistic acquisition.

This morning, both boys came toddling into the bedroom together where I was getting ready for work. They were giggling and babbling incoherently to one another. (I’m pretty sure they were plotting some intricate mischief.) I had to take a step back just to watch their interaction. Time passes so quickly. Continue reading

Barenaked Ladies

I was quite the rebel last night. I went out. On a school night! Because Barenaked Ladies make any evening better.

For those of you questioning the repeated barenaked mentions in this post so far – they are a band. My favorite band, to be more specific. And last night, I headed for the hills to see them perform live. On a Monday! Look at me living large! Continue reading

Supermen

The muppets have been in daycare for a month. Three days into this adventure, they got the sniffles. “It’s gonna come quick and it’s gonna hit hard,” their teacher warned.

Early this week, a clingy Search was deposited in Daddy’s arms. “He’s a little toasty and he just doesn’t seem himself,” the teachers informed us. Continue reading

Super Sale

The time of year has come where colleagues are canvasing the cubicle aisles to peddle their children’s schoolyard wares. Fundraisers for trips, school perks, books, equipment or uniforms.

Bake sales, magazine subscriptions, cookie dough, gift-wrap, coupon books, auctions, scrip, collecting empty cans…kids pitching their school’s fundraising requests seem to come in every shape and size. (Remember the different size and style Weeples – those fluffy things with googly eyes glued to plastic feet – that were offered as prizes based on the amount of money brought in?) Continue reading
