‘Twas the Night Before Christmas (a modern retelling)

Christmas Tree

Twas the night before Christmas, when all through the house
All the creatures were stirring – likely including a mouse.
(Or rather a rat, but with traps he wouldn’t have a very merry Christmas moment.
Bah Humbug rodent!) Continue reading

The Annual Family Christmas Letter – 2012

I know many of you hate receiving these yearly accolades neatly condensed into a single letter – complete with stationary bearing the appropriate winter motif.

(And we went with the fantasy of silvery snowflakes like a good California family.) Quite frankly, if you’re still reading by this paragraph, you’re probably at least a little curious. Or you’re going to forward to all your friends with an accompanying mocking cynicism.

Too bad. I wrote one anyway.

‘Tis the Season

In the run up to Christmas, this weekend was the annual Classy Mom’s Christmas Party. It’s a big event. And the kids are now old enough that all the attendees are mobile – and able to create as much chaos as possible.

This particular soiree comes with instructions. Saturday morning arrived and as the muppets munched on the nutritional delights of Eggo waffles (prior to the pending sugar surge sure to soon occupy the time of all those classy moms), I reviewed the evite – running through the checklist step-by-step. A Christmas Caroling We Go

The saga begins yesterday evening, the day before the hallowed preschool Christmas concert of 2012.

“Well it’ll make a good blog post…” his teacher intoned the moment I walked in to pick up the muppets. “I always tell the parents it’ll be better next year.”

I could not wait. I don’t care if you have an entrenched hatred of holiday tunes and Christmas pageantry – when the toddlers take the stage you drink in that adorableness. And also, mayhem is about to happen. Continue reading

The Festive Forrest (and a lot of rain)

Another major storm was sweeping through the Bay Area. The weather forecast read 100% chance of rain (not “showers” – downpour soak you through and through). So naturally we thought – this would be the perfect day to drive up to the local mountains, hike the hills and cut down this season’s Stream Christmas Tree.

Also, wouldn’t it be fun to take the two toddlers with us? It’ll be an adventure! (Yes. I am well aware this was a blog post in the making.) Continue reading

Graduation from the Kids Table (or our extended generation Thanksgiving dinner)

This is my family.

Thanksgiving. It’s a holiday without any pretense. No gifts, no expectations. No church (or arguments about whether everyone should go to church.) Just a Griswold family gathering with football and feasting (or in my case of the crazy Italians, foosball).

Papa has a broken foot – that one from the downstairs bar and an intense game of kick-the-ball with the boys. (Sorry Dad.) So he limped around with a walking stick while wearing black socks with sandals (I do not know why these events need to be related). Continue reading

Turkey Day Fun Run (or the gallivanting at the grocery store)

Thanksgiving. It’s one of my favorite holidays.

The start of the Holiday Season. (NO CHRISTMAS BEFORE THANKSGIVING PEOPLES!) The arrival of autumn – and cooler temperatures (it’s getting down to 70 degrees here in SoCal).

Yeah, I’m in SoCal with the muppets. A six-hour drive narrated by twin toddlers in the backseat. (At least they weren’t screaming, “I DRIVE” the *entire* time.) They were actually quite good. Really not screechy at all. Except for when I tried to be productive and multi-task on a work-related conference call about three-hours in. Then they piped right up. Continue reading

When Creatures Come to Life (or Halloween 2012)

I picked the boys up from school. Search had soggy pants and a bulge at the bottom of his pants leg. Out fell his diaper. The kid had removed his diaper from WITHIN his pants. So this is how we were going to kick of an evening of costumes huh?

Mad skillz, yo.

The ghouls and goblins were getting an early start. Continue reading
