Barely Legal

Mitch_Reading

Eighteen years ago I was a sophomore in high school. (It just occurred to me that I have been out of high school longer than it took me to get through it.)

Today my cousin Mitch turned 18.

I don’t remember exactly where I was when I heard the initial news, but I do vividly remember standing in the locker room for gym class telling my girlfriends that my awesome AuntJ had just had a baby boy.

The one and only – Mitch. (He of the bitches.)

I was almost 15 when he was born. Precisely 15 years later, Mitch was that very age when the muppets were born. When he was three, he was the cutest attendee at my high school graduation. This spring, I’m bringing double trouble (age 3) to his graduation.

The teenage years aren’t easy (even though you totally know everything during them). So, as the “cool cousin,” allow me to proffer a bit of advice: Although you may now be a legal adult, mental grown-uppedness won’t occur until one day, out of the blue while you’re out living your life, the thought strikes you, “Mom was right.”

18 years? How the hell did that happen so fast? Blink and you miss it.

Happy birthday, Mitch. Your lottery tickets are in the mail.

This is so sweet – thanks Tricia!!! Although I do think it will be a cold day in hell before he EVER utters any words close to “Mom was right!”
