Toddler Speak

Mahi Mahi was on the menu for dinner tonight. Both muppets chowed down in a serious teenage-boy-in-training fashion, while Finding Nemo played in the background.

PISHIE!

(Yes, I fed my children fish while their anthropomorphized dinner just kept swimming on the screen. I know. Mother. Of. The. Year.)

It’s crazy how big they are now. They’re like real little people. It’s just completely… Continue reading

FISHIES: Boys to the Beach

Today’s post is brought to you by JON!

The boys set off an excursion to the Monterey Bay Aquarium today, with bold plans to play with fishies, penguins and otters. I had to work.

Guess what sounds more fun?

I made Jon promise to take lots of pictures. And also notes. Because the blog fodder wasn’t going to suddenly appear whilst I toiled away in my beige-ish cubicle (with a distinct lack of muppets and aquatic animals). He was thrilled. Continue reading

Something Funny Happened on the Way Home

You think by making it through the day without a call saying the kids are hysterical that the first day in the Tiny Two’s class was a rousing success.

I showed up to the sandbox. The yard doody lady called out Search’s name. Five kids looked up. Because there are five Search’s in his class. Yes. He has one of those names. But to keep things interesting for the teachers, they all have unique spellings. (Joke’s on you, class roster!) Continue reading

The Penalty Box

There are certain actions not tolerated in our household (or at school, hence a prior plethora of incident reports). Bad behavior leads to a stint in the penalty box. Time. Out.

“You do that, you go to the box.
Two minutes, by yourself and you feel shame.
And then you get free.”
Slap Shot Continue reading

Potty Mouths of Preschoolers

Disclaimer: Yes, I know the boys aren’t *technically* in preschool. They’re in the toddler class at daycare. Prior to having kids I was just as judgey about parents using “school” for where the tiny tots spend their days. But they are *at* a school. And that’s just easier to say. Plus, preschool worked better for the title of this post.

Also, this post contains language inappropriate for family-oriented audiences. It’s all in pursuit of accurate reporting on the muppets’ development. They said it. Not me.

A Saturday Night With the Music of the Stan Kenton Orchestra

Sometimes, where words fail, music speaks. And the melodies are the memory.

It’s been three months since G.G. left us – I imagine her once again chasing rides in stylish cars and searching out the perfect tan at the water’s edge, while her once and again rock star pursues her. I miss her.

So on Saturday night, I got dolled up and headed out on the town. The Stan Kenton Alumni band was playing at Santa Clara – my own alma mater. (Ok, so the town was two miles down the road.) We were ready to take in some classic big band jazz. And relive the memories in the melody. Continue reading

Catch-22

Guess what I was doing two years ago today. No cheating. Wow. You totally just cheated.

But yes. We are going right back down this rabbit hole. And fair warning – we likely have many years ahead of us doing the exact same thing. So prepare to tuck and roll folks, it’s gonna be a bumpy ride.

Two years ago today I wandered the halls of a hospital looking for the Labor and Delivery unit. (Which, by the by, they hide on the top floor – that makes no sense.) They hooked me up to machines. And we waited. And then I was admitted. It didn’t look good.

I still vividly remember Dr. Meyer shaking his head at me. “Not viable.” He was not a doctor who gave me warm fuzzies.

It was April 22. I was 22 weeks pregnant. Continue reading

For Love of the Game

“Baseball is a very simple game. You throw the ball, you catch the ball, you hit the ball. Sometimes you win, sometimes you lose, sometimes it rains. Think about that for a while.”

I thought about that this week. As I sat on the couch, snuggling with the draft picks of the 2030 season. The ballgame was on. The 2012 Major League Baseball season is upon us.

Sometimes there are sights, smells, sounds that take you back – there are memories in those sensory melodies. And the one that never fails to make me smile is the smell of freshly cut grass, the sound of cleats on the concrete, and ultimately the sight as the boys of summer take the field. Continue reading

Daddy’s Girl

GrampaStavo wanted a boy. I even had a name. I was going to be Daniel.

Then I was born. The nurse entered the waiting room; “You have a beautiful baby girl.” He was slightly disappointed. And then he met me. Continue reading

The Great Cooper Caper

We have dogs. Two of them. A yellow one and a black one.

Remember the 90s cartoon “Pinky and the Brain”? Genetically engineered mice – one brilliant and sly, scheming for world domination. The other desperate to be loved, but may have missed a few days when intelligence was being handed out. Their standard dialogue:

Pinky: Gee, Brain, what do you want to do tonight?
The Brain: The same thing we do every night, Pinky—try to take over the world!
