Stream of Conscious Sunday – Dreams

I’ve always dreamt of being a writer. And Stream of Conscious Sunday seems right up my ally – being that my own site is Stream of the Conscious.

So here goes. Five minutes of pure unadulterated rambling from yours truly. Five minutes a week of seeing how the wheels actually turn in my mind.

No filters. No edits.

Today’s prompt was dreams.

See opening sentence.

My recurring dream though? Yikes. Flunking out of school. I’ve been having this dream since I was in high school.

The terror of flunking science. The horror of having to go explain to my boss that I’m not going to be able to work full time anymore because I have to go back to school. You’d think my subconscious would figure out that my possession of that Masters degree diploma hanging on my wall means I had at least a decent grasp on high school physics.

You would be wrong.

Maybe it’s fear of not being good enough or not being able to succeed. And my subconscious being an evil bitch in the knowledge that I very much spent my senior year of high school terrified that I was going to flunk physics. (We shan’t even discuss the junior year Chemistry experience…)

I rarely remember other dreams. Sometimes the alarm will go off and the single solitary thought on my mind is to curl back up under the blankets and return to my dream – but by 1 or 2 p.m. that afternoon, the memories are gone.

Daydreaming? That’s an entirely different story. I spend most of my days doing just that. Now, before you think I’m nothing more than a Luna Lovegood (besides – I’m a Ravenclaw, Luna’s a Hufflepuff), know that sometimes those daydreams are precisely what spur the creativity.

For this blog. For my job. For life in general.

And thus the timer buzzes. But I quickly make it clear – I totally passed high school, college and grad school. (Even science.)

Update: Luna was indeed sorted into Ravenclaw during her time at Hogwarts – lost in her books.

This was my 5-minute Stream of Consciousness Sunday post. It’s five minutes of your time and a brain dump. Want to try it? Here are the rules…

  • Set a timer and write for 5 minutes.
  • Write an intro to the post if you want but don’t edit the post. No proofreading or spellchecking. This is writing in the raw.
  • Publish it somewhere. Anywhere. The back door to your blog if you want. But make it accessible.
  • Add the Stream of Consciousness Sunday badge to your post.
  • Link up your post at Jana’s Thinking Place.
  • Visit your fellow bloggers and show some love. (Comments are blogger crack.)

  1. Great post! Daydreaming is good. Dreaming about flunking in school is not. But the good news is, you didn’t!

So glad you joined! Wish we were back in NYC again!!

  2. All creative people NEED daydreaming time. It’s where ideas come from.

    I’m a Ravenclaw, too.

  3. I have those dreams where I realize at the end of a semester that there was a class I never did drop — and I never went to it. I then have to go take the final and I don’t even know where the class meets. Come to think of it, this is probably the more frequently reoccurring dream I have at this stage of life.

  4. Daydreaming is a great thing. I don’t have the flunking school dreams, in fact I don’t often have any school dreams, but I do dream about people I went to high school with sometimes.

  5. Luna was a Ravenclaw not a Hufflepuff.
